Childbirth Preparation
The childbirth preparation class is taught by Paula Basden, a registered nurse with over 15 years of experience in maternity care. A graduate of Baylor University with a BSN in nursing,  she has worked in all aspects of obstetrical nursing -  as a staff nurse in labor and delivery units, working in OB offices, and as a childbirth educator.  She has worked with the physicians of Hill Country OB for over 10 years.

Her love of obstetrical nursing and fun teaching style combine to make her childbirth class extremely popular.  Couples that attend her class report feeling well prepared for the adventure of childbirth.

Paula has a strong  belief that childbirth can be one of the most amazing days of a mom and dad's life and is grateful to be a part of her patient's journey to parenthood.   She has three boys of her own.

Breastfeeding Classes are taught by Kristine Kovach.  Kristine Kovach has been a Board Certified Lactation Consultant in private practice and varied clinical settings all around Austin since 1999. She has helped over 15,000 nursing families achieve a workable and enjoyable nursing experience with confidence and peace.

Kristine has trained physicians, RN’s and dieticians statewide through the Texas Department of Health in best breastfeeding/baby friendly practice, and has worked with the wonderful DadLabs crew to reach papas-to-be in helping their new families feed and succeed.

During her experience nursing her daughter and son, she began to realize that though nursing is meant to be natural, it also calls into play a unique combination of art and science, as well as a little humor and a lot of faith. Kristine’s philosophy (as a formula fed infant who adores her own mama) is that guilt and pressure have no place in our development as parents.

Kristine has been a featured lecturer at the UT School of Nursing for the past 4 years. The recent novel The Gap Year by local author Sarah Bird was based in part on time spent observing Ms. Kovach on the job.

Infant Care Class
Infant Care Classes are taught by Candice DeShazo.  Candice is "that mom" that so many new mothers call to get helpful hints on various aspects of caring for a newborn.  Having a baby and navigating those first few years of parenthood allowed her to realize that one of her true passions in life is helping other new parents in that journey.

Candice teaches not only the specifics of what you will need to survive those first few weeks and months with your new baby, but how to enjoy the process and have fun at the same time!

A graduate of Texas A&M, she had a successful career in human resources at a downtown law firm for several years before having children. In addition to educating parents about the best ways to care for a newborn, she runs a custom cake business out of her home.  She works diligently at raising three rambunctious boys, managing her business, and  enjoying time with friends and family.
